Hello Xanga readers. I was just writing to indicate that this would be my last post of xanga.com. I've been posting over at my personal blog for a bit now, and have been using a plug-in to cross post here as well, but haven't felt it's been as ideal as I would like, so I will cease doing that effective today. • Object Writing - Apple/Macs - 10.30.07

I remember when I first walked into the computer lab that Fall morning back in 2000. “What the heck is this?” I thought to myself as I sat down in from of a computer that was oddly shaped almost like an egg with a small profile keyboard, and a round mouse. “They use Apples here?” was my first thought.

I had very little experiences with Apple computers after leaving elementary school and all I had ever heard about that up until that point was how they “sucked” and other horror stories and now I was in a room surrounded by them, and going to have to get really comfortable with these machines for the next two years.

I made peace with that fact fairly quickly and dove right into using the machines. At that time OS X had not yet been released but there were rumblings of it coming soon, and it soon did.

Like a lot of things in life, I quickly realized that a lot of what I had heard could be easily considered FUD, or Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt that was being spread by people who were just as ignorant as myself with these machines. The thought that went into how they were organized was obviously well thought out and made a lot of sense. It was obviously good design not only from a hardware standpoint, but also from a software standpoint.

A few of the things that stood at to me as smart decisions was how the mouse was constructed. While many people may have griped about the lack of a 2nd button on a Mac, computer, the way it was build made it possible to move around a screen quite easily without ever having to let

  • Artist of the Week - Variety Hour with the Soundtrack for The Nightmare Before Christmas

    Jack Skellington

This week’s Artist of the Week is more Theme oriented since there is no one particular artist but a variety of artists that are on a special edition disc of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. I assume the reason/theme is obvious.

The artists are doing their version of some of the more popular songs from the movie. Two songs are identical but done by different artists. I think it’s neat to see their different interpretations. I also find Sally’s Song by Fiona Apple to be exceptionally beautiful.

This is one of my favorite movies and a nice little trivia to know about it is that it took over 3 years to create. It was created using stop motion animation, which means that every frame of the movie was shot one frame at a time. That means that for 1 second of the movie = 24 frames, or 1,440 individual “snapshots” to equal one minute of film. That is amazing to me.

Jump inside to check it out:

It’s a beautiful movie, if you haven’t seen it, please check it out.

  • Tube Amp + Line 6 Modeling Technology = Line 6 Spider Valve

Although a Vox AC30(or AC15) is still the dream amp I’d like to own, this Line 6 Spider Valve sounds very interesting. Maybe I’ll be able to give it a run at a music store sometime soon. The idea of combining Line 6 modeling technology with a real tube amp (not a hybrid) seems like a pretty decent selling point to me. I’m a fan of their Delay and Modulation Modelers and they’ve gotten plenty of use of my pedal board (and will continue to do so) so the ability to combine the sound, feel and tone of a tube amp with these effects seems pretty tempting.

The only immediate drawback I see now is that it’s a 40W amp, which sucks because that’s really loud for most of my stage use. My current amp is only 30 watts, and I can barely use it past 2 or 3 and that’s even too loud as it is. Ideally, a 15 watter (actually something less even) with the tone control and effects loop of these amps would be great but I think Line 6 may be onto something here.

Check out the amp at Line 6.
